With Thanksgiving just a week away, the holidays are officially upon us. It’s time to dig out the holiday print scrubs from wherever they’re hidden in your closet. Or if your wardrobe needs an update, stop by Lydia’s and check out the
holiday prints that we currently have to offer. My favorite is this
cute penguin print from White Swan. And if you’re looking for affordable scrubs our holiday prints start at $13.99 so they won’t break your bank.
Which
holiday print do you like best??

Q. I’ve started my Christmas shopping early this year and have already made a ton of progress. My co-workers are next up on my list of people to shop for, but I’m stumped on what to get for them. Do you have any ideas on affordable gifts that I could get for a few of my favorite co-workers?
A. Thanks for the question! In my opinion you can never go wrong with a Lydia’s gift certificate, especially for a co-worker. We offer gift certificates in several denominations, so you can easily stay within your budget. Using a gift certificate, your co-workers will be able to pick out whatever they want or need from Lydia’s so you know they’ll love it. And not to mention, our gift certificates are super cute. If you want to go a different route than gift certificates there are some excellent options in our Med Supply Center. Our new Grey’s Anatomy scarves have been popular with customers; if your co-workers are Grey’s fanatics you might want to consider one of these. Another idea is a tote bag. Our Microfiber Tote, for example, comes in three different colors, is only $10.99 and would be perfect for carrying things to and from work. These are just a few suggestions. If you need more ideas, don’t hesitate to ask! And by the way, kudos on being so on top of your Christmas shopping!

Resourceful Nurses? The Problem with Workarounds
Courtesy of NurseConnect
Nurses are a savvy, resourceful group. I’m not sure if this is an innate or acquired trait. But it is definitely a common one in our profession. Perhaps necessity really is the mother of invention. Whether or not they call it by name, most nurses are familiar with the concept of a “workaround.”
A workaround is an unapproved strategy used for accomplishing a required task. There are many reasons that nurses resort to workarounds. Due to the crisis nature of much of our work, we often lack the time to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, missing or damaged supplies, or noncompliant computer screens. We have to find a way to make it work. STAT.

The Ask Liza series on the blog is back for its second week and today I have a question from a reader regarding dress codes.
Q. I’m in charge of creating a dress code for the clinic that I work at. What recommendations do you have for where to look or how to get started??
A. Thanks for the question. I’ll try to give you a few suggestions that will make this an easy task and hopefully the result will be a professional new look for your workplace.
To get started, I think you should browse through our Lydia’s Direct Look Book. This mini catalog is made for groups and each page offers ideas on how to coordinate different medical uniforms, colors and prints. Plus, we included a variety of brands and options in the look book since we know that dress code regulations vary from place to place. So start here and see what you think. It’s a great place for inspiration- even if you don’t see an exact look that you want; I bet it will still spark some ideas.
Second, I would recommend browsing through our collection of Cherokee Authentic Workwear scrubs. When it comes to groups, these medical scrubs are our best sellers and with good reason. They come in 32 different colors and there is an enormous selection of basics (prints and solids) for men and women. If you decide to go with Cherokee Authentic Workwear for your clinic it could be as simple as choosing one style and one color for everyone or choosing one color and then allowing employees to pick the style of scrubs that works best for them; you can even find prints that coordinate perfectly with the solid color that you choose. Below is one example of coordinating Cherokee Authentic prints and solids.
I hope that these suggestions get you started as you create a new dress code for your workplace. And if you need more help don’t hesitate to ask!
Do you have your own questions about uniforms?
Send them this way and I’ll post my answers next Monday, here on the blog.
So due to HIPPA reg. I cant say a name, but a little 7 year old boy comes into the office. Mom apparently had had enough. The boy was complaining of hearing a static noise in his right ear. So I perform the usual triage basics and off to the room we go, I sit the small boy upon the exam table and look into his ear with a light. And low and behold I see what seems to be a piece of Styrofoam. Apparently the boy is having a fetish with putting objects into his ear.So I tell him that would be a good reason is to why your hearing walkie talkies going over and out in your ear (which is how he explained to me about the static he was hearing) I tell the Dr. what the problem was and how it was so close to the outside of the ear you could fan it out. lol. So i retrieve the tweezers and remove the Styrofoam. No longer than 2 days later, the same boy comes in and im saying to him oh you are here for your follow up , how is your ear. the mom laughs and grins, I say WHAT??? She says to me No, no follow up , we are here for the removal of his pencil eraser from his ear, I laugh and say no way, so again same exam room , same light, SAME EAR, me, Amanda has hit the jackpot with pencil eraser, NOT 1 BUT 2, in the same ear, so again I remove the foreign bod(ies) from the ear, and send the boy on his way with a lollipop. AGAIN!!! Same boy , different day only 4 more days, he comes in, the boy has rocks from a fish tank a few rainbows colors to be exact, and guess what you guessed it, in the same ear. I finally said look off to Southeast Texas Ear, Nose, and Throat you go, and I suggested a psychiatrist. Needless to say the boy well his ear is doing fine, still having relapses of putting foreign objects in his ears, but I can say he is established at The SETX ENT, and is not my ER Patient anymore, LOL.

When you buy medical scrubs at
Lydia’s, you’re not just shopping- you’re investing in your career. An investment in a professional, put-together appearance will give you confidence and help you leave a positive impression on your boss, co-workers and most importantly, the people who put their trust in you each day, your patients.
I know that it’s important for each of you to achieve a professional look without emptying your wallet, and at Lydia’s you can do just that. To show you just how affordable our scrubs are I’ve taken three uniforms (seven pieces) and broken down the cost of this investment in your career. If you wore each of these looks 52 times per year (that’s once a week), the investment for each outfit would be less than $1 per wear; that’s not bad! P.S. The investment for just one piece is as low as $0.23 per wear-less than a quarter!
These are just a few examples of affordable looks from
Lydia’s. We have many (hundreds!) more choices at prices that won’t empty your wallet. And if you have any questions as you’re deciding on a look, don’t hesitate to
ask. I would love to answer your questions and help you invest in your career!
Training the Trainers: Developing Today’s Nurse Preceptors and Mentors
By Susan Kreimer, MS, contributor at NurseZone
When Jan Hastings, MSN, RN, became a nurse 34 years ago, formal training for preceptors didn’t exist.
“It was kind of an expectation that once you were comfortable in your role, that you would be able to precept,” said Hastings, manager of nursing education and professional development at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill. Nursing research later showed that “training is absolutely necessary to be a good preceptor.”
In recent years, health care facilities have implemented more formalized training for preceptors. “There has been an explosion of online precepting programs,” said Meg Gulanick, PhD, APRN, FAAN, a professor at Loyola University Chicago’s Niehoff School of Nursing in Maywood, Ill., and some nursing schools are turning to professional preceptors instead of the typical “clinical faculty” to guide undergraduate students.

Today marks the first day of a brand new series on the Lydia’s blog: Ask Liza. One day each week I’ll be answering all of your questions about medical uniforms and scrubs. Got a question about what’s in style? Here’s the place to ask it! Want to know which size will fit your specific body type best? I’ll give you my personal recommendations. Whatever your question might be, whether it’s about prices, sizing, styles, brands etc., I’ll do my very best to give you a helpful and informative answer.
Submit your questions here.
I’m going to kick off the series with a fun question that recently came up. So here we go:
Q: I love having the most fashionable scrubs at my work place and I can’t wait for a new Lydia’s catalog to come in the mail. What styles and trends will be coming out in your next catalog that I can look forward to? A: Just last week I was thumbing through the racks of our newest products and there were a couple of looks that jumped out at me. Browsing through these medical scrubs it was clear that prints are going to be huge next season, especially for the fashion forward. I noticed scrubs that featured more than one print, which is a definite style statement. I also saw a very fun top that features a bold, can’t be missed image; it’s completely one of a kind and I love that! Seeing these nursing scrubs showed me that uniform designers are really pushing the envelope to provide health care workers with new up and coming styles. In addition to the trend of prints there were some unique necklines that I think you’ll like. In my opinion different style necklines provide an easy way to mix up your normal look, while still keeping it basic.
And the third thing that caught my eye was a new collection of medical uniforms from a popular street-wear brand. I don’t want to ruin the surprise so you’ll have to wait and find out which brand I’m referring to.:) If you have your own question,
send me an email and I’ll feature your question in the next Ask Liza segment. I can’t wait to hear from you!

Our
Lydia’s Direct mini-catalog is online now at LydiasUniforms.com, so I’m here to spread the news. The catalog is filled with fun ideas on how to coordinate different colors, prints and styles for a group and it’s the perfect place to start if your team is searching for a new look, or an update to its current look. One of the ideas that’s included in the catalog is putting together these three Cherokee scrub tops. I love how they’re different, but coordinate so perfectly; they would definitely unify the look of a team.

So check out our
new mini-catalog and let me know what you think! If it inspires you to come up with some of your own group looks, feel free to share your ideas
here.
