Thursday, October 1, 2009 by Liza Ollila

Speak your mind and win a spot as guest editor at Lydia’s Uniforms. If you win you get a $50 gift certificate to spend on new medical uniforms and your winning entry will be featured on our blog! Each month there will be a different topic, so feel free to enter every month to increase your chances of winning. We’re running the contest wherever you connect with Lydia’s, whether it’s our blog, MySpace or Facebook.

Halloween is almost here and this month I want you to leave a comment and tell me what your workplace is doing for this fun holiday. Will you be wearing your favorite spooky medical scrubs? Maybe you’ll be handing out candy or having a costume party. Whatever you're doing for Halloween at the workplace I want to hear about it. So leave your comment now and you’ll be entered to win. At the end of the month I’ll select one comment and the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Lydia’s Uniforms. Good luck to everyone who enters!

The important details (there aren’t too many):
-Comments must be under 200 words.
-The contest will begin on the first of each month and end at 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month
-One winner will be chosen from all of the comments we receive.

Our unit does not really have anything planned at this time. I was going to suggest that we decorate. Ususally there is a 'calling' for units to do so and there is an unspoked competition that is in the air. This year I would like to suggest we buy some inexpensive paper-like molds of skeleton faces and paint them. The idea is that they will all be different. Then we can hang them along the nurses station. It would be cool! I am in the suggesting part right now. We will see how co-hesive the team is or is not!

Our hospital celebrates Halloween and other holidays with great excitement. On Halloween, we have our annual Halloween Parade and Costume Contest. Each nursing unit and department enters as a team creating wonderful and creative themes and costumes. Just to name a few, in the past we have had, 101 Dalmatians, from the X-ray Dept:costumes of skeletons with funny abnormalities or medical mishaps, Snow White and the 7 dwarfs, and O.R. zombies. We parade throughout the hospital visiting patients and family members to bring smiles and a few minutes of happiness in their hard times. At the end, the best costume wins and a free lunch for the department is given as a prize. It is a lot of fun. It gives the whole hospital and individual dept. a chance to work as a team to do what we do best "heal", this time with little laughter and fun.

I am a kindergarten teacher and we recently decided to try scrubs at school. We are having fundraisers each month until January to raise money for St Jude Children's Research Hospital. This month we are letting the students buy paper pumpkins and put a teacher's name on it. The teacher with the most votes has to wear a costume all day on the 30th.

I work in a dental office and we give out free toothbrushes and toothpaste samples to kids. We also decorate the office with kid friendly decorations, a dental office is scarey enough for kids as is!

I love Halloween at our hospital! Our town is small and "trunk or treat" is very popular...so we participate by dressing in our favorite costumes and inviting the local children to visit each nurse's station for treats. It's so wonderful to see how excited and encouraging the children are. Many of our patients are hospice care or chronic illness, so they aren't able to get out and enjoy these things. It is such a reward to be able to bring a piece of the outside world into our facility! We also use this as kind of a kick-off to the holiday season, as Thanksgiving and Christmas will be right around the corner. What a festive spirit hangs in the air! I cannot wait!!

OUr department loves to decorate for the holidays- so of course we are decorating for halloween. We try to get creative with decorations- and everyone pitches in. We have fall and halloween tops we wear, and we enter a halloween pumpkin decorating/carving contest. This is the second year- and offices get really creative- carving, painting, decorating. last year we did a toilet theme for being in ensoscopy- who knows what this year will bring. there's also a fun fair- educational - at the end of the month. each dept. participates in and we walk around to learn something about the depts- kind of like trick or treating with learning and candy.

I work for an FQHC in a small rural community. Our Halloween plan is to participate in the community trick or treat night and stay open late that Thursday night. We are going to decorate the waiting room, have a safety station for tips to trick or treat safely, hand out glow sticks. The next area will have a reading area that will have a witch handing out books for the Reach Out And Read Program. Then finally we hand out the treat bags along with coupons that have been donated by our local drug store good for ten digital pictures. We are so excited!!!

I am a veterinary technician and at the animal clinic where I work, we dress up as different characters or monsters. We also dress up our "clinic cats" who stay there all the time, as witches, pumpkins or whatever else we can find to fit them. Customers love being greeted by the scary creatures at the door.

Our dental clinic has a Cash for Candy event. What we do is have a contest that encourages the children in the community to bring in their candy and we give them one dollar per pound of candy. Then the candy that has been collected is sent over to the US troops. It is a great event that gets everyone involved. We also paint the windows with Halloween decorations and dress up in festive scrubs and Halloween attire. It is a very fun time of year and everyone gets involved!

Here in our Pediatrics department the excitement of costumes, trick or treating, and our annual Halloween parade is running rampant. Employees are darning their Halloween scrub tops and talking about what they will dress up as for the day of our parade. The children have decorated numerous pumpkin, monster, and ghost coloring sheets, and we have taped them up to the wall. Each one is unique and special, and the homemade decorations have added a fun and unique touch to our work area.

This Halloween we are taking our oldest daughter who is 14 to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA as a surprise. We are going to go to the HalloSream there. She has no idea and will not find out until she opens the card that morning on her way to school telling her where she is going when she gets out of school. I have arranged for someone to keep our 4 year old twins, so this will be a very special Halloween for her.

Last year everybody received an e-mail stating that for our entire region, (clinics and medical centers, hospitals, etc.) we were not to wear halloween scrubs that had: ghosts, spiders, witches, skeletons, or anything that might "offend" someone! Can you believe it? I really don't think many people read the e-mail or paid any attention to it, because this year, already, I've seen scrubs with all of the above! I didn't have any halloween scrubs, but this year, since I'm working this Halloween and the day after, I would like to buy a black scrub jacket, scrub top and pants. Maybe an orange top-or a t-shirt with a big fat pumkin? Is that safe enough?
