"Strut Your Scrubs" - Review by Erin from Real Moms Real Views

Erin from Real Moms Real Views - "I live in a constant whirl wind!  Between the part time job I work as a Medical Assistant for a foot doctor, my full time job as a maid, cook, and taxi driver, I am the mommy to 4 fab kiddos!  It is a very busy life, but I adore it and wouldn’t trade it for anything.  I have been married to my best friend and the man of my dreams for 11 years, yes, they are the same guy.  We spend every free minute enjoying our kids and doing fun family activities including camping, swimming, playing games and having movie night.  I love baking yummy treats but mostly eating the yummy treats!"

Erin recently reviewed our Contrast Mock Wrap Scrub Top and Flare Leg Scrub Pant from our Lydia's Select Scrubs collection!Lydia's Select Scrubs review by Erin from Real Moms Real Views

Our Lydia's Select Contrast Mock Wrap Scrub Top features contrast along mock wrap and sleeves, two pockets, back darts, set-in sleeves, side slits, is made with 60% cotton/40% polyester and is 27 1/2" long.

The Lydia's Select Flare Leg Scrub Pant features a grosgrain drawstring at front waist, elastic in back, two side pockets, one back pocket, a flare leg with reinforced side slits, is made with 60% cotton/40% polyester and is 31" long for regular, 29" long for petite and 34" long for tall.

Erin explains her need for a medical uniform that shows her personal style: "As a working momma, I have to get to wear scrubs 4 days a week to work.  Everybody always tells me that I am lucky that I get to wear scrubs, but I sometimes think they are boring.  You can only accessorize so much when you are trimming someone’s toenails (gross, I know)  Instead of wearing the Blah scrubs that you see in some doctor’s offices, we can wear whatever we want.  That means we can go as fun as we want.  I love BRIGHT!!  My favorite part of scrubs is that you can wear things that you would NEVER wear and call it a uniform!"

Erin chose to review the Lydia's Select items in the colors Aqua/Steel Grey, and this what she had to say: "If I can toot my own horn, I made an incredible pick!  I love this set!  The top is such a fun, bright color of aqua, perfectly accented with grey trim.  I order the tall in the pants…I have a length issue.  If my pants don’t drag on the ground, then they never get worn.  The flare leg is super flattering and I love the side slits, they sit perfectly over you shoes.  The waist is draw sting, so you get the perfect fit.  If you have never ordered scrubs before, be aware that they tend to run big.  In a shirt, I usually wear a medium, but I wear a small in scrub sizes.  In fact, I could have ordered an extra small in this top and been okay.  I wear a size 4 in pants and ordered a small.  They are a smidge baggy, but that is better than skin tight.  So, I guess what I am saying is check the measurements before ordering :)  I was very impressed with my first pair of scrubs from Lydia’s.  I have already talked them up to the girls that I work with and the first day I wore them to work, I got all kinds of compliments on them.  Real Mom Approved!!"

5 Unusual Health Care Careers

Health care is one of the most promising job sectors in the United States. The demand for new health care professionals continues to grow rapidly, and health care workers are often well compensated.

They can work just about anywhere, and besides the extrinsic rewards, the work carries plenty of intrinsic value. Health care professionals devote their lives to helping others, whether they are saving lives as a paramedic or fighting cancer in oncology.

While the more common occupations include doctors, nurses and medical receptionists, there are some more unusual careers that you may not have considered. These are five more unusual — yet essential — health care occupations:

1. Medical Aesthetician
Medical aestheticians work with patients on improving their physical appearances and skin care. Most aestheticians complete a cosmetology program and have a state license, which involves passing an examination; a biology background is a plus. Aestheticians often work under dermatologists and plastic surgeons, helping patients whose appearances have suffered due to injuries and ailments. Duties might include giving facials, medical peels and laser hair removal. Besides showing patients how to care for their skin, medical aestheticians help boost their self-esteem.

2. Holistic Nurses
Reminiscent of Florence Nightingale, holistic nursing emphasizes the treatment of the whole person, rather than a symptom or disease. The American Holistic Nurses Association describes individual treatment plans that target every aspect of patients’ lives, emphasizing “the interconnectedness of body, mind, emotion, spirit, social/cultural, relationship, context and environment.”

3. Orthotists
If someone suffers from a spinal or limb injury or defect, he or she may need to wear a special brace or splint; orthotists are the professionals who work with patients to fit and construct these orthotic devices. They also train patients on how to use and care for the devices. Becoming an orthotist requires an associate’s or bachelor’s in orthotics or orthotics and prosthetics, as well as passing a certification exam.

4. Traveling Phlebotomists
When your doctor sends you for routine blood work, it is a phlebotomist who draws it. If blood and needles do not make you queasy, and you like to travel, traveling phlebotomist might be the position for you. To become a traveling phlebotomist, you need to complete a training course in phlebotomy, pass a certification exam, then receive on-the-job training. Traveling phlebotomists typically serve home-bound patients and work at blood drives.

5. Poison Information Provider
Many new parents find themselves calling poison control at some point during their children’s young lives. In 2009, more than four million calls were made to poison control in the United States; 72 percent of those calls were treated at home with no further need for a visit to the doctor. The poison control provider is the invaluable person on the other end of the phone line, offering emergency treatment information. Most poison control providers are nurses or physician’s assistants, with at least one year of experience in their field. Besides fielding public calls, they provide poison training and treatment recommendations to other health care providers.

This post is written by Erica Moss, who is the community manager for Georgetown University’s online masters in Nursing program, offering one of the nation’s leading family nurse practitioner programs.

Featured Customer Review: "It is probably my favorite scrub top and I've been a nurse for over 5 years."

This ready-to-wear heritage has shaped the way we approach designing and manufacturing medical uniforms and accessories and has helped the brand become the overwhelming favorite of healthcare workers in the United States. We are dedicated to bringing the fashion, comfort and quality of the ready-to-wear market to the functional apparel worn by healthcare professionals.

A Solid Choice

IguanaMed Dual Swirl Scrub Top

A few staple uniform colors are your go-to Browns, Blacks, Whites and Navys. You can't go wrong when wearing these simple but stunning colors. Especially when pairing them with your favorite print top!

Black has been, and will always be, a favorite color in practically everyone’s wardrobe... We all end up using it at some point in time! Black scrub pants make for a great foundation to many medical professional’s uniforms. I love the pairing of our White Cross 3-2-1 Wild And Free Crossover Scrub Top and our White Cross 3-2-1 Flare Leg Scrub Pant In Black.

Brown is another must-have color! So many different colors and prints go well with Brown, even Black which I think it is forgotten by many. While I was flipping through our new Fall 2012 catalog I noticed a really fun Print top, the White Cross 100% Cotton Wild Stripe Scoop Neck Scrub Top  which can easily be paired with our White Cross Six Pocket Flare Leg Scrub Pants in Espresso.

White is one color that some shy away from. Possibly because of the age old rule “You Can't Wear White After Labor Day”. But White is a really fun color to brighten up with just about everything and it just always looks crisp and fresh! Another great thing about White is that pretty much every brand has the same shade so you can mix and match without the hassle of trying to make sure you select a top and pant from the same brand. The White outfit I paired has a range of brands including our Grey's Anatomy by Barco Heart Line Lab Coat over top of our Med Couture by Peaches Hidden Accents Contrast Mock Wrap Scrub Top. I would pair this outfit up with a all-time customer favorite the Koi Lindsey Scrub Pant in White.

Last but not least is the color Navy, a great color to wear at anytime and for anything! You can easily pair it with a variety of colors or wear it as a full set. I personally like the all Navy look with a hint of lime green! Our new IguanaMed Dual Swirl Scrub Top and IguanaMed Legend Cargo Scrub Pant both have the small Lime Green logo along with a fun green drawstring on the pants.

These are just a few of my go-to solid colors, I would love to hear what yours are!

Put on purple, tell the story, change lives

Lupus Awareness Month

Today marks the beginning of Lupus Awareness Month. This year, the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) is asking the public to “Put On Purple” for lupus awareness by wearing purple and telling people why they are showing their support for all people affected by this disease. May 10th is World Lupus Day and Friday, May 18th is Put On Purple Day.

Each year an estimated 16,000 people develop lupus and 90% of those are women (www.cure4lupus.org). This is a scary statistic when many have no idea what lupus even is. I was in that category up until a few years ago. Lupus Awareness Month is something that means a great deal to me because I am one of the 1.5 million Americans with lupus (www.cure4lupus.org).

I have always experienced issues with my health, like joint pain and swelling, fatigue, and fainting spells because my iron levels were too low and no one could figure out why. By the age of sixteen I had undergone many ultra sounds, stress tests, and blood tests; I was ready to give up looking for an answer. It was not until I was 18 that I was finally given an answer, so it is not hard for me to believe that 50% of lupus patients see at least 3 doctors, over at about 4 years before being diagnosed (www.cure4lupus.org). The complexity of lupus makes it difficult to diagnose and treat.

I believe there are a couple key things about lupus everyone should know; including that at this time there is no cure and it is not certain what causes lupus. There is a misconception of what lupus actually is; it is not a form of cancer. It is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs (Medical News Today). One of the hardest things to understand about lupus is just how unpredictable it really is; this is actually something my doctor has had to remind me of many times; especially when I go from feeling great and feeling like I am “cured” to being bed ridden for an entire day.

Lupus fact shet

Lupus Awareness Month is one way to get the word out about this disease, to raise awareness and funds for research in the hope of finding a cure. This is just a little bit of insight on lupus and Lupus Awareness Month; please feel free to find out more information with the following links:

Love Your Heart

As you may know, February is American Heart Month. Why is this important? Because heart disease kills more men and women than any other cause, including cancer. Even breast cancer.

The thing is, we often overlook risk factors for heart disease and we do things that are not really nice to our hearts. As busy professionals, nurses often do things like eat foods that are not healthy but convenient. We don't always have the time to exercise, and sometimes we feel to exhausted to even think about it. Even though we know better, some of us smoke, or drink more alcohol than we should. And probably almost all of us are living with high stress levels that we are ignoring. I know I am no picture of health. Up until the last few months I ate fast food...a lot. About the only workout I get is when I go up and down the stairs in my house. And Lord knows I have a lot of stress eating away at me. And the thing that makes it even worse is that I have a family history of heart disease.

So what do we do to protect ourselves from this nasty killer of women and men? Eat right by getting at least 9 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Limit your red meat and unhealthy fats, choosing healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. Quit smoking if you currently are doing so. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day or less...although red wine does seem to have some protective heart benefits. And this will be the hard one. Learn to de-stress. My doctor is on me all the time about that one. He's even recommended I try something called HeartMath-although I am sure there are similar programs that work just as well. Even a few minutes a day of meditation or guided imagery may help.

Secondly, arm yourself with knowledge of the symptoms of a heart attack, and know when to seek medical attention for any health concerns. Heart attack symptoms are different in women than men, you can check out this website at the American Heart Association to learn more about them.

So this February, don't forget to wear your red scrubs in honor of Heart Awareness month. Although the National Go Red For Women day has passed, that still doesn't mean we can't raise knowledge of the problem. And love your heart-it's the only one you've got!

5 starsFavorite Scrubs!

I have been wearing scrubs for work/school for over 15 years. I have been through many styles/brands, but have never been so pleased. The fabric is soft and comfortable and does not wrinkle. They do run a little small, so you may have to go up a size. I have a 36DD bust with a size 28 waist and took a large top and medium pants. Worth every penny, and if you get them on sale...even better!

Returns/Exchanges, Our Policy is Your Comfort

Hello everyone, today I thought I would review our return policy and clarify a couple of questions that we have received in regards to exchanges and returns.

Remember that we accept returns or exchanges on any items within 60 days as long as those items have not been washed, embroidered, or altered. Medical shoes can also be returned within 60 days as long as they do not show any scuff marks or signs of wear- make sure you try them on a carpeted surface!

To send back your items simply fill out the return/exchange form located on the back of your packing list and send them back using the insured carrier of your choice. You are responsible for the shipping costs back to us, but the shipping on your exchange order is free.

To finish up, I'll cover some things to keep in mind that will help you avoid unnecessary returns.
  • When ordering medical scrubs it is important to remember that different companies will have different dye lots. To make sure your items match always order uniforms that are the same brand.
  • Many companies have different lines of scrubs (For example, Cherokee has the Workwear line and the Flex-i-bles line), which usually have different materials, so again it is recommended to only order items from the same line to make sure they match properly.
  • Most of our value scrubs have limited quantities available, so when placing an exchange for some different value scrubs it's best to call ahead to make sure that we have your items available.

Great maternity pants! Got the black. They're the only pants that fit and I'm 38 1/2 weeks pregnant. Got the Small size. They're soft and keep their color well. The matching black top with the stretch sides were also a good purchase. Love that doesn't have the white pouch like some of my navy blue maternity pants. Good quality. Would buy again.
